If you go into this film comparing it to the Arnold Schwarzenegger original then you’re going to be disappointed. But if you haven’t seen the 1990 Arnie classic and have no comparison, or even if you have seen it, so long as you look at this re-imagining as a stand alone film then the experience will be totally different. The 2012 remake is exciting, full of action, has that great story from the original; keeping in some of the most memorable bits like the three breasted woman, with the added bonus of a stunning aesthetic made possible with advanced special effects that make for some incredible world building.
It’s GO! GO! GO! all the way through, non-stop with some of the best girl on girl ass kicking sequences I’ve seen. Kate Beckinsale who plays Lori, Douglas’s (Colin Farrell) wife, and Jessica Biel who plays Melina, a rebel with the Resistance are both tough and buff women. I wouldn’t mess with them. Colin Farrell does pretty well himself. Taking on a role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger. These are tough boots to fill and while Farrell is not in the same league as Arnie (lets face it who is?!) he’s great to watch.
This modern re-imagining of Total Recall is really just one long action sequence. No surprise there as Len Wiseman (husband of Kate Beckinsale) directs, a man who has already taken on the action heavy Underworld Franchise and 2007’s Die Hard 4.0. It’s fun, not to be taken too seriously but rather sit back and enjoy the ride.
